New England Clambake for Mama
For the first time in nine years that I’ve been here in the US, I celebrated Mother’s Day with Mama by my side. Instead of greeting her across the miles, I was able to plan some activities that made her feel special on this day.
My hubby and I were planning to bring her to a whale watching via Boston Harbor Cruises, which coincidentally happens to have a boat named AURORA, just like Mama’s name. Sweet!
Unfortunately, the strong winds from previous night did not calm down and we cancelled our whale watching plan. My hubby and I thought that with Mama getting cold too easily even with just a little breeze, it might not be the best day to be out at the Atlantic Ocean.
So, we thought of going out for dinner but going to a restaurant without any reservations is a big no-no during Mother’s Day. I also didn’t have any defrosted meat that was good enough for an elaborate meal. I was just about to give up when I realized that if we couldn’t bring Mama to the ocean, then we might as well have some seafood for dinner. To make this trully unforgettable for her, we’re going to have her first New England Clambake. We went to our local Market Basket after we came out from church with just enough time to buy some fresh lobsters, clams and corn on the cobs before the store closed! We cooked everything at home and Mama enjoyed her dinner immensely!
Earlier that day, she received a flower bouquet from Chad’s son. So thoughtful of him. For our dessert, I made from scratch a Coconut Carrot Cake from a recipe I saw online.
We also gave Mama a set of picture frames (1) Portrait of her right after she was told she couldn’t see on right eye anymore and when she sprained her ankle coming home - sad as it may, the two of us actually ended up laughing on her consecutive mishaps/accidents during her first month in America; (2) Picture of us at Incheon Airport in Korea wearing traditional Korean costumes - to remind her of our first overseas trip together.
At the end of the day, Mama had a great time and she was happy..which all that matters.
